Turning Table Talk Into Plain Language

Steve MTG is a searchable jargon decoder for Magic: The Gathering players. It translates slang, acronyms, card nicknames, strategy terms, and table shorthand into plain language, with examples and visual references that make the terminology easier to understand in context.

I designed and built the product from an informal player request, developing the product structure, brand direction, content model, contribution workflow, and working application.

Ways of Working

The Problem

Magic: The Gathering has its own language: acronyms, card nicknames, strategy terms, shorthand, and phrases that experienced players use without explanation.

That creates friction for newer and returning players. The information exists, but it is scattered across conversations, forums, videos, and years of community knowledge.

I wanted to create a faster way to answer a simple question: “What does that mean?”

Tools & Methods

I started with a real request from another player and translated the idea into product requirements, content structure, and core user tasks.

I used ChatGPT to refine requirements, organize the taxonomy, work through interaction decisions, and define the content model. I used Base44 for vibe coding and rapid development, building directly into a working application and refining the experience as features were added.

The product structure grew around several core tasks: search a term, browse unfamiliar language, understand it in context, contribute missing terminology, and manage the lexicon.

Solution

From Inside Joke to Useful Tool

I designed and built Steve MTG, a searchable jargon decoder for Magic: The Gathering players.

Each entry gives users a plain-language translation, additional context, examples of how the term is used at the table, and relevant cards when a visual reference helps explain the idea.

Users can search or browse the lexicon, find terminology by category, and submit missing terms for review. The contribution workflow also lets community members choose how they want to be credited if their submission is published.

I also built an authenticated admin experience for managing lexicon entries, visual references, submissions, and future site features.

Project Outcome

Streamlined Workflow

Steve MTG is a live, public application that turned an informal request into a structured community resource.

The working product now includes search, browsing, detailed term pages, community submissions, authentication, and content-management tools, with room to expand as the lexicon grows.
